THE PENGUIN KEEPER

We were very lucky that Kyla's mum came to tell us about when she worked as a PENGUIN KEEPER at Kelly Tarlton's in Auckland.

Did you know Paula and the other penguin keepers feed the penguins in the penguin enclosure at Kelly Tarltons. They feed them by hand; krill, squid, mussels and herrings. They are hand fed so none miss out. Their keepers know which one is which because they have bands. The penguin keepers wear gloves, wetsuits and an air tank when they are in the water scrubbing the pool. The wet suit is to keep warm and to protect the divers from penguin pecks. The other hard jobs she does are cleaning the rocks and nests they are hard jobs to do because the Gentoos could nip you.
